Kaz Hirai, the chief executive of struggling electronics empire Sony, discussed launch plans for PlayStation Vue during a CES 2015 press conference PlayStation Vue, the cloud-based TV service that will bring as many as 75 television and content channels to games consoles, is due for public launch in the first calendar quarter of 2015. Kaz Hirai, Sony's chief executive, confirmed the launch plans during his CES keynote speech on Monday. He said that the service would at first come to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 consoles. The price model, and international rollout plans, have yet to be revealed. Vue customers will be given access to live TV, catch-up and on-demand content from six media conglomerates: CBS, Fox, NBC Universal, Discovery Communications, Scripps Networks, and Viacom [Disclosure: CBS is the parent company of GameSpot]. The scores of channels that will launch with the service includes the likes of Animal Planet, National Geographic, Oxygen, Sprout, Syfy, HGTV, Food Network, Travel Channel, Comedy Central, MTV, and Nickelodeon. In November, the service was previewed by a select group of invite-only beta testers, all based in New York, and Hirai said the commercial rollout would begin "in the first quarter of this year." The chief executive claimed that PlayStation Vue "reinvents the television viewing experience." He said it "brings the best of live TV, and an extensive catalogue of content, keeping you constantly connected to what's popular, what's new, and what's trending." Later, discussing the commercial success of the PlayStation 4, Hirai said PlayStation Vue will help make the console a "comprehensive product platform with unparalleled entertainment experiences."
