It's the day of IMAX news announcements, it seems! Following news that "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" would enjoy an IMAX release and that "Batman Begins" would be re-released in the format alongside its "Dark Knight" sequels later this summer comes yet another announcement of a hotly awaited project boldly going where many other recent films have gone before. J.J. Abrams' still untitled "Star Trek" sequel joins those aforementioned movies in the IMAX club, as announced Wednesday (June 13) in a joint press release from IMAX Corporation and Paramount Pictures. Captain Kirk, Spock and the rest of the U.S.S. Enterprise crew will debut in IMAX 3-D on May 17, 2013, featuring a number of action sequences that were shot from the ground up with IMAX cameras. "We were so thrilled with the creative results of shooting IMAX for 'Mission: Impossible' that we jumped at the chance to use the format for 'Star Trek,' " Abrams said of the news in the statement. "All expectations were exceeded — the action and resolution is insane at this scale. We cannot wait for audiences to see the crew of the Enterprise in a way they never have before." Paramount Pictures' Vice Chairman Rob Moore added: "J.J. and the filmmaking team behind the 'Star Trek' franchise are once again working to give audiences one of the best film going experiences available today. Following the great success of the first film in the newly revived franchise, the sequel to 'Star Trek' will no doubt be among the top choices for moviegoers next summer." Little is known about the plot and premise behind Abrams' second "Trek" flick, save for the fact that it involves the return of the heroes fans remember from the first film: Chris Pine as Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Karl Urban as Bones and Zoe Saldana as Uhura, among others. Also joining the fray this time around are franchise newcomers Alice Eve and Peter Weller, both of them well-known quantities in the sci-fi space via "Men in Black" and "RoboCop" respectively. That's not even mentioning Benedict Cumberbatch, the "Sherlock" star who makes his "Star Trek" debut here as a still unidentified villain. "It's great fun, great, great fun," was all Cumberbatch would tell MTV News about the sequel when we spoke with him in February. "It's a great thing to come into something that everybody's familiar with and knows each other very well. So it's [in] a weird way a very easy thing to get up to speed with, because everybody is so welcoming and gets along with one another."
