Super Hexagon and VVVVVV developer Terry Cavanagh has made a Flappy Bird tribute in his own inimitable style: Maverick Bird.

Maverick Bird, a browser-based Flash game you can play right now (via Polygon), replaces Flappy Bird's Nintendo-esque pipes with sharp, angled columns, throws in some various other hazards, and introduces a dive button for swifter drops.

The catchy music in the background is also "Vietnam" by Kozilek, from the artist's Pluto EP. You can listen to it online, and I'll wager you might even have it on repeat for most of the afternoon.

"Thanks for the inspiration, Dong," wrote Cavanagh. "Looking forward to your next game when things settle down!"

The story of Flappy Bird culminated over the weekend when creator Dong Nguyen decided to take the chart-topping application down, which triggered a rush of clones and imitators swooping in for a grab at its success.

Flappy Bird "happened to become an addictive product," said Ngyuen yesterday. "I think it has become a problem. To solve that problem, it’s best to take down Flappy Bird. It’s gone forever.”

After spending a good chunk of the morning battling away at Maverick Bird (my personal record is a pathetic 17), I think I'd happily pay $0.99 if it ends up coming out on iOS or Android. How about you?
