Oo-de-lally! Today I’m taking a look at one of the most recent releases in the Super7 Disney Ultimates Collection, the heroic fox outlaw Robin Hood. The figure was sent over by my friends over at Fun.com for review purposes. I’m very grateful for that because this is one of my most anticipated figures of the year. Disney’s Robin Hood is one of my favorite Disney movies and if I had a Top 10 of animation this movie would definitely be on my list. I had been interested in a Robin Hood figure for my collection for a few years now. My son’s name means fox, I’m an amateur archer, and I really love this movie so those factors got me excited for getting a figure of Robin Hood. That was a difficult task as there aren’t many figures available. I had some European action figures on my eBay watchlist for a while but the cost was prohibitive. I also have a McDonald’s figure from the 90’s but that figure doesn’t represent the character very well. This figure however is everything I would have ever wanted and then some…
This is my second Super7 Ultimates figure, I recently purchased the TMNT Ultimates Ace Duck at the Super7 Store in San Diego but I have yet to open it, so technically this is my first Ultimates figure that I’ve opened. I really love the packaging and while it is beautiful and artistically designed that’s not my main reason. These figures come with so many accessories that it just makes sense to keep the boxes for storage. So for practical purposes I’ll probably keep this really cool box forever, this is rare for me since I’m usually an out of box collector. Although I wish there was a creative way to display the figure with all it’s accessories because they are fantastic.
The figure itself seems worth the price point but with everything the figure has it seems like a bargain. The figure comes with everything you’d expect Robin Hood to come with short of Little John: bows, arrows, quivers, a great extra portrait, and an entire outfit to disguise itself. I have seen complaints that the Stork disguise seemed like it would have been a separate figure in itself but I was never under that impression. I was hoping it would be an outfit that changes the character’s look so I’m not at all disappointed. As a kid I loved all those quick-change Batman figures and anything with a similar play pattern so it’s cool to get a collector’s version of that.
The Stork disguise adds a lot of value but obviously you have to make the choice of how you want to display your figure or buy a second figure in order to display them together. I’m okay having the option but I most likely won’t really every use those accessories again. It was fun to put the Stork disguise together but some instructions would have been nice since I almost ripped my figure’s arms off when all I had to do was replace the hands. The long, lanky legs were a bit tricky to figure out as well but I was very surprised by how well it stood.
The extra portrait shows Robin after a run-in with the Sheriff of Nottingham’s men and was a great addition. I would have loved an extra set of accessories to dress him up as the old, blind beggar but I’m happy with what’s included. I can’t state enough how great this figure is on its own. It embodies the spirit of the character without losing any articulation that one would expect from a premium figure, especially one that has a very unique body type. He’s able to hold his bow and arrow in a shooting position (not in the safest way if I’m looking at it from an archer’s perspective) and stands very well, very well balanced considering he has a big bushy tail.
When I get a new figure I usually have to figure out where to put it, if I even have space for it, or will I be okay putting it in storage for the time being. This figure had a already had a prominent place waiting for it on my bookshelf next to my edition of Howard Pyle’s Robin Hood stories. This figure looks great on the shelf and is not only one of my favorite figures of the year but probably ever. Super7 does these figures in limited runs so if you have any interest I’d recommend getting it as soon as possible. This figure is currently available at Fun.com right here. Don’t sleep on this figure!
