The long awaited and highly anticipated Rick and Morty Season 4 is finally upon us. After an interminable two year wait, we're finally getting more adventures of the mad sociopathic genius Rick Sanchez and his moody teenage grandson Morty Smith.

While the show is literally named after the two main characters, the show's incredible surrealism and total lack of realistic limits means there's a wide variety of strange and interesting side characters as well. Some have had recurring appearances, while others have made lasting impressions after appearing for a short time.

In celebration of Rick and Morty's triumphant return, we put together a list of 10 of the best and most ridiculous Rick and Morty characters so far.

10. The Residents of Hamster-in-Butt-World

First appearance: Season 1, Episode 8, "Rixty Minutes"

A blink-and-you'll-miss-it post-credits stinger, we briefly got a glimpse of this bizarre dimension when the Smith family was surfing through interdimensional cable. They suddenly see a commercial for what seems like a reality show about hamsters living inside literal butts.

The Smith family takes a vacation to this alternate dimension and see that all living creatures are hamsters and their homes are tiny apartments inside human butts--which include tiny TVs, couches and a staircase leading outside the butthole. Sadly, we don't get to find out how they can find their butt person if they ever leave the butt and their person wanders off.

9. Scary Terry

First appearance: Season 1, Episode 2, "Lawnmower Dog"

Rick and Morty has given us plenty of smarty and hilarious riffs on pop culture characters and franchises, but few are as funny as Scary Terry, an obvious legally sound knock-off of an '80s horror character (except with miniature swords for fingers instead of knives).

Terry even shares Freddy Kreuger's love of using puns when he's terrorizing people, and also calling them "b****." Of course, this being Rick and Morty, Terry turns out to be a family man with a tough job and deep insecurities. It's these silly but clever differences that make Scary Terry a memorable character.

8. Noob Noob

First appearance: Season 3, Episode 4, "Vindicators 3: The Return of Worldender"

Rick and Morty is a show about underdogs. Even though Rick is the smartest man alive, he's despised by just about everyone, and Morty is simply a teenage kid lacking all self-confidence (at least at first). This is why we root for them. Season 3 introduced to another loser character who gets trampled by everyone: I'm talking about Noob Noob.

The blue collar sidekick to the superhero team The Vindicators, Noob Noob is belittled by his colleagues, forced to serve as their janitor and never given the chance to do anything heroic--that is if they even remember he exists. Noob Noob's catchphrase "god damn" defines his entire existence, making it both incredibly sad and hilariously memorable.

7. Pencilvester

First appearance: Season 2, Episode 4, "Total Rickall"

Besides the interdimensional cable episodes, "Total Rickall" contains the biggest amount of new and strange characters we never see again. One of the best ones is simply an anthropomorphic talking pencil aptly named Pencilvester.

When an alien parasite infiltrates the minds of the Smith family, weird creatures come to life by implanting themselves in the family's memories. Pencilvester was apparently lifelong friends with Rick and Morty, to the point where Rick tearfully had to step away and let Morty kill him.

6. Furniture People Using Humans As Chairs

First appearance: Season 1, Episode 10, "Close Rick-counters of the Rick Kind"

Another blink-and-you'll-miss-it yet memorable visual gag, when Rick and Morty find themselves running from the Council of Ricks, they start hopping through a bunch of different dimensions. All of them involve people ordering pizza over the phone, with each dimension swapping the food with the people and the furniture.

The joke finally pays off when Rick and Morty enter a dimension where two sentient furniture people sitting on actual people order phones for dinner over a slice of pizza. To make matters better, we see Rick and Morty leave the house and walk down the street, where they see furniture people using trucks as bottles, and driving around on bottles like cars.

5. Abradolf Lincler

First appearance: Season 1, Episode 11, "Ricksy Business"

Described as Rick as "a misguided effort of mine to create a morally neutral super leader," Abradolf Lincler is basically Frankenstein's Monster but political--an amalgamation of Abraham Lincoln and Adolf Hitler.

Due to his extreme and constantly at-odds opinions on race and slaves, Rick considers Lincler a lame weird loser who is no fun at parties. Lincler spends his brief time on the show struggling to balance his wishes of the "eradication of inferior genes," and his support of freeing African-American slaves. This being Rick and Morty, it makes perfect sense that Abradolf was just a loner looking for someone to emancipate him all along.

4. Squanchy

First appearance: Season 1, Episode 11, "Ricksy Business"

A cat-like creature who is both a party animal, a Hulk-style monster, and an auto-erotic asphyxiation enthusiast, Squanchy is best known for his use of endless variations of the word "squanch."

Squanchy is a bit of a disturbing and very raunchy individual, after all, he is made to look like a feral cat who is addicted to both alcohol and sex. His ridiculousness mostly comes from the nonsensical way the word “squanch” is made to be both a word for friend, but also a lot of obscenities.

3. Ants In My Eyes Johnson

First appearance: Season 1, Episode 8, "Rixty Minutes"

Running a business in this economy is not easy. But doing so while having literal ants in your eyes in just impressive, that's why Ants in my Eyes Johnson is such a bleak yet funnily inspirational character.

One of the many weird characters to come out of the interdimensional cable episodes, Johnson runs a regular appliance store, or at least he thinks so. Of course, the ants in his eyes prevent him from really seeing anything and being sure what the hell he's selling. To make matters worse, he is also unable to feel anything, which results in a memorable and very painful first impression.

2. Butter Robot

First appearance: Season 1, Episode 9, "Something Ricked This Way Comes"

Rick and Morty is a bleak and nihilistic show, there's no doubt about it. No matter how many off-the-wall devices Rick comes up with and how many colourful and exciting adventures he and Morty embark on, there's an underlying feeling of pointlessness to it all. Butter Robot even got a cameo in Season 4.

There is no better personification for this than the unnamed Butter Robot, created by Rick with the sole purpose of passing the butter to Rick at breakfast time. "What is my purpose?" the robot desperately asks, and when Rick clarifies that his purpose is simply the mundane task of passing butter, the little guy just sighs and lets out a sad "Oh my god." It's brief, bleak as hell, and one of the best one-off character moments in the show's history.

1. Mr Meeseeks

First appearance: Season 1, Episode 5, "Meeseeks and Destroy"

In Season 1, Rick and Morty introduced the world to a magic box that can summon a Mr. Meeseeks--a loud, blue, anxious, instantly iconic being (or is it more of a device?) with an aggressive desire to help the user with a goal or task before disappearing in a puff of smoke.

When your sole purpose is to complete small task, doing something abstract or even as difficult as helping Jerry do anything makes existence a pain. So of course, Mr. Meeseeks finds it simply impossible to help Jerry get better at golf, and it goes mad by simply being alive, leading to an all-out frenzy at a restaurant. And that was just the character's first appearance on the show, of which there have been several since. It is fair to say there has been no character who has caused as lasting an impact as Mr. Meeseeks.
