The Batman Has Cast Carmine Falcone

Matt Reeves' new movie The Batman continues to add more villains to the mix. Reeves took to Twitter to announce that John Turturro (The Big Lebowski, O Brother Where Art Thou?) would be joining the cast as Carmine "The Roman" Falcone, an infamous gangster who first debuted in comics during the legendary Batman: Year One by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli.

Tuturro is joining an already stacked cast including Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne, Collin Farrell as Osward "The Penguin" Cobblepott, Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle, and Paul Dano as Eddie "The Riddler" Nygma. Also recently confirmed was Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, one of the very few purely heroic characters in the mix thus far.

In the comics, Falcone and his crime family have a complicated relationship with the Waynes that often puts a level of strain on Bruce's strict black-and-white moral code. He's often one of the most powerful--if not the most powerful--men in Gotham, secretly running the government from the shadows with a web of corrupt politicians and civil servants. In addition to Batman: Year One, Falcone and his family were central characters in Batman: The Long Halloween and its follow-up, Batman: Dark Victory, which expanded upon the Falcone legacy. However, it's too early to tell which, if any, of these stories Turturro's incarnation of the character will borrow from.

The Batman hits theaters on June 25, 2021.
