The Best Horror Movies Of The Year, According To Metacritic


In 2022, we all saw some amazing movies. It was a long year that gave us blockbusters like Top Gun: Maverick and hilarious comedies like Weird: The Al Yankovic story. However, 2022 was one of the best years for horror in decades.

And while really great movies like Nope and Black Phone got a lot of people talking, they weren't even the 10 best horror movies of the year, according to Metacritic. Once again, GameSpot is taking a look at sister site Metacritic, a critic review aggregator, to figure out what the top 10 horror movies of 2022 are.

Metacritic looks at approved critics' reviews and scores--sometimes giving a score to the review as well, based on the writing--and gives the movie in question a rating based on the score's average. From there, we looked at all the new horror movies on Metacritic this year--ones with seven or more reviews--and put them into a top 10 list.

Here's the most wild part of this year's list. As far as review scores go, every movie on this list is in the top 100 horror movies of all time. That's right. That's how good this year's slate of scary films was--they're all-timers.

From the surprise hit Barbarian to a few Shudder exclusives, there are a lot of great horror films to check out, if you missed them. 10. We're All Going to the World's Fair


Metacritic score: 78

Following a teenager named Casey, the film sees her play an online role-playing horror game called the World's Fair Challenge. She documents what's happening to her and uploads the videos to the internet. As the challenge goes on, a stranger reaches out to her, in this surreal horror drama.


9. Barbarian


Metacritic score: 78

Starring Georgina Campbell as Tess, Barbarian is about a woman who is interviewing for a job in Detroit and gets an AirBnB in a rundown neighborhood. She arrives and finds it's been double-booked by a man named Keith (Bill Skarsgård). From there, it goes on an unpredictable and incredibly wild ride filled with twists and turns you never see coming.


8. Saloum


Metacritic score: 78

Saloum takes place in 2003, and the Shudder movie follows three mercenaries that are attempting to escape the coup in Guinea-Bissau. They take refuge on the Soloum river in Senegal--a mystical area, and they find themselves being hunted.


7. Piggy


Metacritic score: 78

A daughter of a butcher is constantly harassed by others for being overweight. While trying to escape torment from a group of girls, a stranger kidnaps the bullies and takes them away in a van. When the police try to get more information about the kidnapping, she refuses to talk, as she's intrigued by the man who saved her.


6. Speak No Evil


Metacritic score: 78

Speak No Evil is a clash of cultures horror film. It follows two families: one from the Netherlands and one from Denmark. After becoming friends while visiting the same city on vacation, the Danish family visits the Dutch family in their countryside home, but it turns out that there's something more sinister going on with one of these families.


5. The Innocents


Metacritic score: 79

What if, as a child, you and your friends had cool superpowers? That sounds like a really fun, coming-of-age movie, right? Well, The Innocents takes a twist as these young children with newly-discovered superpowers gets a bit dark as these powers get used to harm others.


4. X


Metacritic score: 79

Set in Texas in the late-70s, X follows a production team that rented a barn on a farm in order to film a pornographic movie, but doing this without the owner's of the land knowing. Of course, the owner's find out, and things get a little deadly for the filmmakers.


3. Mad God


Metacritic score: 80

Mad God is an experimental film from Shudder that is set in a world of monsters. Centering around a fortress surrounded by a labyrinth, an Assassin traverses the landscape in a film that mixes live-action and various styles of animation.


2. You Won't Be Alone


Metacritic score: 80

Taking place in the 1800s in Macedonia, a girl is taken and turned into a witch by an ancient spirit. She wanders the forest, kills a villager, and inhabits bodies of people for years.


1. Soft & Quiet


Metacritic score: 82

Finally, the highest-rated horror movie of 2022 on Metacritic is Soft & Quiet. Emily creates a group of like-minded women, and when picking up refreshments for a meeting, she encounters someone from her past. There, the movie leads to a chain of events that are horrifying, as this group of women deals with a very real life-changing situation.
