What's Old Is New At CES 2020

The majority of CES 2020 focuses on futuristic technology that may or may not ever actually release, but some of our favourite things at the show focus on refining the past into something new. Whether its 3/4-scale arcade cabinets, new plug-and-play devices, or a Game Boy-focused retro console, there was plenty to see and get excited about at CES 2020.

Arcade1Up had a lot to show at CES 2020, including a limited-edition Burger Time cabinet, an NBA Jam cabinet with online multiplayer, and more. We at GameSpot were also able to visit Hyperkin to check out a prototype of their new retro console that plays Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games.

Limited-edition Burger Time cabinet from Arcade1Up

Arcade1Up's big marquee machine at the moment is its limited-edition Burger Time cabinet. Unlike the rest of the company's line of 3/4-scale cabinets, it's only available for pre-order on Arcade1Up's website. What makes this cabinet particularly special is its light-up marquee and unique Burger Time cabinet design with the rounded side panels--most of Arcade1Up's previous cabinets have featured the same basic shape. In addition to Burger Time, the machine comes installed with Karate Champ, Bad Dudes, and Caveman Ninja.

One of the most exciting additions to Arcade1Up's lineup is the NBA Jam cabinet, which includes NBA Jam, NBA Jam Tournament Edition, and NBA Hang Time. However, the big marquee feature of this particular cabinet is online multiplayer. Up to four people on four different machines can play against each other--and there's no extra fee. Arcade1Up also did the work to license most of the original players.

Now, you can't buy this for your home, but if you were on the CES 2020 showfloor, you might find yourself in the shadow of this fully-working behemoth. We at GameSpot played a couple of quarters on this machine, and while it was fun and totally functional, we're glad the NBA Jam cabinet that Arcade1Up will actually be selling will fit inside our homes.

Golden Axe cabinet from Arcade1Up

This Golden Axe cabinet is awesome because it's the first time The Revenge of Death Adder has been officially re-released since the arcades. However, it's not the only game included in this cabinet; Golden Axe, Altered Beast, Wrestle War, and Shinobi are all featured as well.

Sit-down Atari Star Wars cabinet from Arcade1Up

Arcade1Up's Atari Star Wars cabinet released last year, but if you're looking for an experience that's closer to flying an actual X-Wing, then the company's sit-down version is a good fit for that. It comes with a removable bench and Atari's Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi games.

Frogger cabinet from Arcade1Up

The Frogger machine brings the arcade classic to Arcade1Up's 3/4-scale line-up. It features the original Frogger, in addition to Time Pilot and Time Pilot '84.

Star Wars digital pinball table from Arcade1Up

One of Arcade1Up's CES 2020 announcements was that it's venturing into the digital pinball space. Partnered with digital pinball developer Zen Studios, it's creating 3/4-scale versions of both modern and classic tables. Unfortunately, they weren't playable, but we were able to get a look at the Star Wars table you see above, and one for the pinball classic, Attack From Mars. We don't yet know for sure which games will be included with each table, but we'll be sure to report back when we learn more.

Plug-And-Play devices from Arcade1Up

Another thing Arcade1Up revealed was a line of plug-and-play devices featuring retro games and a controller resembling that of the Sega Saturn's. No games have been confirmed, but the devices on show featured Pac-Man, Mega Man, Mickey Mania, ad DuckTales. If you look closely at these two pictures, you can see they each include multiple games. Arcade1Up told us it's working with multiple partners, including Disney, Namco, ColecoVision, Intellivision, Commodore 64, Atari, and more.

Retron Jr. from Hyperkin

Hyperkin's Retron Jr. wasn't playable, as it's still in development, but GameSpot got a look at a prototype of the console that's capable of playing Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games. It outputs via HDMI at 720p, and we'll learn more about it later this year.
