While the streaming service landscape has become increasingly crowded in 2019--and it's only going to get worse in 2020--Netflix remains one of the most-popular of them all. This past year, Netflix has shifted its focus to original programming, most likely because it's losing content like The Office, Friends, and Disney movies to other various streaming services. While not every Netflix original is a hit, when a show lands, it lands hard, and it's one of those watercooler shows or movies that gets everyone talking. In 2020, there is a lot of original and exclusive content coming to Netflix you'll need to keep your eye on. From new seasons of your favorite shows, to comic book adaptations, to new content that sounds interesting, there is something for everyone coming down the line. We've gone through everything we know is coming in 2020 to pick out the 17 biggest and possibly best Netflix originals to watch next year. Most of these shows and movies don't have specific release dates yet, but we have noted release information when we have it. Here's what you should watch in 2020.
Locke & Key
Release date: February 7, 2020 One of the many comic book adaptations coming out in 2020, Locke & Key is highly-anticipated from comic fans. In early December, we got a release date and poster for the upcoming series. Starring Darby Stanchfield (Scandal), Emilia Jones (Horrible Histories), Connor Jessup (American Crime), Bill Heck (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs), Thomas Mitchell Barnet, and Griffin Gluck (American Vandal), the show follows a three siblings who lose their family and move into their ancestral home. However, this house holds secrets and magical keys that give people extraordinary abilities. Locke & Key is an adaptation people have been waiting a long time for, and it's almost here.
Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous
Release date: Sometime in 2020 Building on the world created by numerous big-budget summer blockbusters, Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous is an animated series that follows a group of teens who head to an adventure camp on Isla Nubar. And guess what? The dinosaurs on the island escape! The group has to survive and escape the rampaging dinos. There isn't a lot known about the show at this time. Scott Kreamer and Lane Lueras will serve as showrunners and executive producers for the join and be joined by executive producers Steven Spielberg, Frank Marshall, and Colin Trevorrow.
The Haunting Of Bly Manor
Release date: Sometime in 2020 2018's The Haunting of Hill House was a smashing-success for Netflix, and GameSpot's #1 TV show for that year. It was one of the scariest TV shows of the year, so it wasn't any surprise when it was announced in February this year that Season 2 is happening. A specific release date hasn't been revealed yet, but it will be arriving in 2020. The new season is based on the 1898 Henry James novella The Turn of The Screw, with showrunner Mike Flannagan will return to direct. Catherine Parker, T'nia Miller (Years and Years, Free Rain), Rahul Kohli (Supergirl, iZombie), and Amelia Eve (Mens Sana, Big Boys Don't Cry) have all been cast. They'll join Victoria Pedretti, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Henry Thomas, and Kate Seigel, who return to the series in brand-new roles.
Altered Carbon: Season 2
Release date: 2020 Altered Carbon is arguably the best sci-fi show on Netflix. It's weird, intriguing, and at times, high-concept. Season 1 ate up all out time as we binge-watched, and we demanded more. February was the last time we heard anything about the followup season to the series. New cast members were revealed and that's about it. Anthony Mackie (Avengers: Endgame) will play Takeshi Kovacs--played by Joel Kinnaman in Season 1--Simone Missick (Luke Cage) will play Trepp, Dina Shihabi (Jack Ryan) will play Dig 301, Torben Liebrecht will play Colonel Ivan Carrera, James Saito (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) will play Tanaseda Hideki, Renée Elise Goldsberry returns as Quellcrist Falconer, and Chris Conner returns as Poe. The show went into production back in February, and while there is no official release date yet, we could see it early on in the year.
Castlevania: Season 3
Release date: Sometime in 2020 It's been over a year since we've gotten new episodes of the Netflix animated series, which is one of the best video game adaptations to date--sadly, that's not saying much if you look at the track record. Back in April, Season 3 was announced for the animated series. And this month, there was an accident tweet stating Season 3 would be hitting Netflix in December. However, it won't be arriving until sometime in 2020, but it will be well-worth the wait as Seasons 1 and 2 were fantastic.
I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson: Season 2
Release date: Sometime in 2020 Tim Robinson's sketch show I Think You Should Leave was bizarre, easily one of the weirdest sketch comedy series in years. Robinson's unique brand of humor is absurdist and pushes the envelope for how far it's willing to go to deliver its comedy. While we don't know a lot about the upcoming season, series co-creator Zach Kanin told Variety that The Lonely Island will be involved.
American Jesus
Release date: Sometime in 2020 Based on the comic by Mark Millar of the same name, American Jesus is headed to Netflix sometime in 2020. The comic follows a 12-year-old boy who learns he's the second coming of Jesus Christ, and he has to save humanity. The show went into production late 2019, so it may be a summer 2020 release.
Jupiter's Legacy
Release date: Sometime in 2020 There is another comic book adaptation from Mark Millar coming to Netflix in 2020, Jupiter's Legacy. In a world where the first superheroes received their powers in the 1930s and are revered as heroes, Jupiter's Legacy follows the children of these heroes, who do not live up to their parents' accomplishments. There have been some issues with production, though. Halfway through shooting, showrunner Steven S. DeKnight left the production due to "creative differences," according to Deadline. Sang Kim (The Walking Dead) took his place to finish the final four episodes of the eight episode season.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Interactive Special
Release date: Sometime in 2020 While Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt came to an end with Season 3, it won't be the end of these character's adventures. Netflix is utilizing its interactivity abilities for Kimmy Schmidt, much like we saw for Black Mirror "Bandersnatch" and Bear Grylls' You vs. Wild. Ellie Kemper, Tituss Burgess, Jane Krakowski and Carol Kane will return for the 2020 special, which will allow viewers to take characters on different paths. So far, this "Choose Your Adventure" style storytelling has been mediocre at best, but this style keeps getting better and better. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt has been an incredibly funny series, so it will be really exciting to see how this interactive special comes together.
Ju-On: The Grudge
Release date: Sometime in 2020. While there is a Grudge reboot movie coming in Januaray 2020, there is also a Netflix series arriving next year. Very little is known about the show, but there is an official synopsis for Ju-On on its Netflix landing page: "The J-Horror classic franchise Ju-On was actually based on real events that occurred over four decades--and the truth is even more terrifying." The overall story for the Ju-On series follows a vengeful curse that behaves more like a virus, killing its host and moving on to infect someone else. Shô Miyake is set to direct, and more than likely, Ju-On will arrive on Netflix in late-2020.
Masters of the Universe: Revelation
Release date: Sometime after April 2020 Netflix is exploring He-Man once again with Masters of the Universe: Revelation. The anime series was announced back in August, with Kevin Smith serving as executive producer and showrunner. The series will be a continuation of the classic '80s cartoon, wrapping up storylines we haven't seen in three decades. Will He-Man do something other than bodyslamming Skeletor to defeat him? We'll find out this year when He-Man finally returns to television.
GLOW: Season 4
Release date: Sometime in 2020 Season 3 of the hit Netflix series may have a been a little bit of a departure from previous ones, but the wrestling series will come to an end in 2020 with the fourth and final season. The gorgeous ladies of wrestling are leaving Las Vegas and headed onto bigger pastures, headed back to Los Angeles. Alison Brie, Betty Gilpin, Marc Maron, and others will reprise their roles from previous seasons. Hopefully, the final season has a bit more wrestling in it.
Space Force
Release date: Sometime in 2020 Steve Carell is joining forces with Greg Daniels once again, and no, it's not for a reboot of The Office. The show is called Space Force, and it will star Carell as one of the people in charge of putting together President Donald Trump's armed force division that will defend satellites from attacks and do other things in space. Obviously, because of the talent behind the show, it will be a comedy. No other details for the series have been released yet.
Transformers: War for Cybertron Trilogy
Release date: Sometime in 2020 Have you ever wondered where Transformers came from and why the Autobots and Decepticons hate each other so much? In 2020, a new animated series will explore that. Netflix, Hasbro, and Rooster Teeth are all working together on the War of Cybertron Trilogy for the streaming service, and it will tell the origin story of the Transformers universe. The series will feature a new animation look and style, and Transformers veteran FJ DeSanto will serve as showrunner.
Hollywood
Release date: May 2020 Ryan Murphy--the mind behind American Horror Story--is working with Netflix on new projects, and the next one to keep on your radar is Hollywood. The show is a period piece, which is a love letter to the golden age of Hollywood, the 1940s. The series will star Darren Criss, David Corenswet, Jim Parsons, Joe Mantello, Dylan McDermott, and Patti LuPone.
Big Mouth: Season 4
Release date: Most likely Fall The coming-of-age animated comedy series had Seasons 4, 5, and 6 greenlit over the summer, as creator Nick Kroll revealed in a tweet. Additional details aren't known at the time of this writing, but you can obviously expect more comedic content about growing up, puberty, and sex.
The Umbrella Academy: Season 2
Release date: Spring or Summer Filming for Season 2 of the comic book adapted TV series wrapped up in November. The dark superhero series based on the comic of the same name was a surprise hit. Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, and Justin H. Min are set to return to the series, and they will be joined by new cast members Marin Ireland, Ritu Arya, and Yusuf Gatewood.
