A snowstorm nearly prevented Spider-Man from clipping the Vulture’s wings in PETER PARKER: SPIDER-MAN #37, but a little hot help from the Human Torch cleared a path to victory. Later, the webslinger made an army of mimes holler “Uncle!” in PETER PARKER: SPIDER-MAN #38.
After Aunt May discovered Peter Parker’s secret identity as Spidey, she told her nephew they needed to talk in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #37. Fusion and Doctor Octopus formed an alliance in PETER PARKER: SPIDER-MAN #39, but when Spidey stuck his nose into their dealings with the Biotechnix firm in PETER PARKER: SPIDER-MAN #40 Ock turned on his partner and battled the webslinger for a valuable device in PETER PARKER: SPIDER-MAN #41.
Strange attacks on citizens in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #40 led Spidey to a being called Shade who drained life energies in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #41. Our hero, with the help of Dr. Strange, entered the astral plane in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #42 to confront Shade on his own turf and end his attacks. Later, Spider-Man tried to convince J. Jonah Jameson that the recent reveal of Daredevil’s secret identity qualified as a hoax in DAREDEVIL #34, and offered some advice to the Man Without Fear in DAREDEVIL #35.
Celebrities started disappearing at the beach in PETER PARKER: SPIDER-MAN #42, prompting the wallcrawler to pose as guest on a TV show to hide his investigation of the incidents. When the Sandman stood revealed as the culprit in PETER PARKER: SPIDER-MAN #43, Spidey fed the captured celebrities’ egos to cause his grainy enemy to explode.
The Green Goblin taunted Spidey with the threat of an upcoming funeral in PETER PARKER: SPIDER-MAN #44, and when Peter saw video of Gwen Stacy’s death on TV and Flash Thompson’s crash of a truck into a school in PETER PARKER: SPIDER-MAN #45, he knew the Goblin meant business. A violent showdown ensued in PETER PARKER: SPIDER-MAN #46, and when the Goblin threatened the life of his own grandson, the webslinger called his bluff in PETER PARKER: SPIDER-MAN #47 and refused to allow his foe to goad him into killing him.
Peter flew to California to patch things up with Mary Jane in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #43, while a ruthless man named Carlyle stole Doc Ock’s technology to rampage through Los Angeles. Spidey got in the middle of warring octopi in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #44, and beat Carlyle soundly in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #45. Ock himself took off to leave his old enemy to fend for himself.
