The Office is coming back (sort of)
More than a decade after The Office ended in 2013 (and more than 20 years since the original BBC series), Greg Daniels is creating a follow-up to The Office. No, it's not a reboot or a revival that brings back the main cast. But it does take place in the same universe and has the same setup, which is that a documentary film crew following a group of workers, but this time it's a newspaper. In this gallery, we're running through everything we know about the show so far, including who's in it (and who's not), when it starts filming, the key creatives behind the camera, and where the show will air, among other things. Read on to learn everything we know so far, and be sure to keep checking back as more information is inevitably released in the time ahead. What is The Office follow-up about?
The Office follow-up doesn't have an official title as of yet. However, we do know what it's about. The story takes place within the same universe as the American version of The Office. It follows the story of a dying historic midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with unpaid reporters. The documentary film that followed Dunder Mifflin Scranton for all those years is now documenting the efforts of the paper's staff and chronicling everything. The setup for the show has rubbed some people the wrong way, given its story structure involving reporters who are not being paid for their work. It remains to be seen, though, how the show handles its subject matter. Who's going to be in The Office follow-up?
The first to be announced as leads for the new show are Domhnall Gleeson (The Revenant, Harry Potter) and Sabrina Impacciatore (The White Lotus Season 2). Details about their characters have yet to be revealed. Gleeson has a connection to the world of The Office in that he starred alongside Michael Scott actor Steve Carell in miniseries The Patient. Impacciatore, meanwhile, was a standout star of Season 2 of The White Lotus, becoming a fan-favorite character for her wit and charm. The new version of The Office will presumably have an ensemble cast like the earlier editions did, and casting announcements are no doubt still to come. A major part of the success of The Office was the rapport and dynamics between the main characters played by Scott, John Krasinki, Rainn Wilson, Jenna Fischer, and more. Much has been said and written about the casting process for The Office and how crucial it was to get a group of people together that gelled in a special way. Only time will tell, however, how the casting shakes out for the follow-up series. One person who likely will not be in the new version of The Office is Carell. He previously said he plans to watch but has no desire to come back. "I will be watching but I will not be showing up. That is off the cards. It's just a new thing. There is really no reason for my character to show up in something like that. I'm excited about it. It sounds like a great conceit. I love the idea," he said. Wilson, on the other hand, is more open to the idea of coming back. He said he doesn't know why his character, Dwight, would travel to the Midwest, but he would come back if asked. "If Greg [Daniels] wants me to do something, I'm happy to do something. But, I am sad that they're leaving Scranton. I understand... why they're leaving Scranton, but I kind of feel like there should be like seven different Office spinoffs kind of like Law and Order. Like there's Law and Order: SVU and Law and Order: Criminal Intent, and there should be all of these workplace documentaries going on, but they should all be in the Scranton Wilkes Bar, Lackawanna County, greater Metropolitan area." Given that the new version of The Office is set in the same universe as the previous show, it seems likely there will be cameos. No doubt dropping someone into the world would help the show attract more eyeballs for Peacock. But it remains to be seen how and if that will happen. Is there a trailer for The Office follow-up?
The new version of The Office was only just officially announced in May, and cameras are not due to begin rolling until July, so there is no footage or a trailer as of yet. Who's directing The Office follow-up?
There is no word yet on who will direct episodes of the new version of The Office, though it's already been confirmed that Daniels is the co-creator alongside Nathan For You's Michael Koman. Fans will no doubt recall that The Office had numerous directors over its many seasons, including Jon Favreau, Harold Ramis, Joss Whedon, Paul Feig, Bryan Cranston, JJ Abrams, and Jason Reitman. Some of the show's stars, including Paul Lieberstein, BJ Novak, John Krasinski, Rainn Wilson, and Ed Helms all each directed at least one episode of the show. When is The Office follow-up coming out?
Filming on the new version of The Office begins in July. Given that, no one should expect the show to arrive in 2024. A debut sometime in 2025 seems more likely, though nothing is confirmed.
