Welcome to Buzzworthy's "The Week In Pop," where we round up new album releases, talk show musical guests and appearances, TV appearances by your favorite pop stars and more (so you don't have to).
They say all good things come to those who wait, and this week our five-year long wait for a new Shins album is over. The Portland band drops Port of Morrow tomorrow, ending our sorrow, no need to wallow... okay, I'll stop now. You never know quite what Odd Future will stir up when they drop music, or drop into town -- find out what they have up their collective sleeves on The OF Tape, Vol. 2 on Tuesday. Also, U.K. band The Wanted hits "Tonight Show With Jay Leno" this week. Their hit single, "Glad You Came," has been burning up the Billboard 100 chart. Plus, Katy Perry's "Part of Me" video premieres on MTV on Wednesday, followed by a 30-minute interview where she'll be answering fan questions on "MTV First: Katy Perry."
Check out this week's album releases and television show music guests below.
NEW ALBUM RELEASES
Tuesday, Mar. 20
+ The Shins, Port of Morrow: It's been a half decade between Shins albums, and frontman/songwriter James Mercer returns with a whole new band and album. Single "Simple Song" is signature Shins, with heart-tuggingly romantic lyricism and indelible melodies, and the rest of the gorgeous album follows suit.
+ Melanie Fiona, The MF Life: She recently took home two Grammys for the song she co-wrote with Cee Lo Green, "Fool For You." Judging from her big-voiced "4 am," her sophomore outing (which includes guest spots from Nas, John Legend, B.o.B., and J. Cole, along with some writing from Drake) is one to anticipate.
+ Odd Future, The OF Tape, Vol. 2: Often derisive from the word "go," with lyrics that stick, both from their disturbingly controversial topics to their earworm flow, Odd Future's Tyler, The Creator helmed this set, with the entire OFWGTA collective contributing to the 18-tune release.
Check out more new album releases and upcoming TV appearances and performances after the jump.
+ Diggy Simmons, Unexpected Arrival: The young rapper's 15-song debut album features contributions from Jadakiss, Jeremih, and Tank. With his storytelling rhymes, it serves as a good introduction to the MC.
+ MGK, Half Naked & Almost Famous EP: Bad Boy Recording artist Machine Gun Kelly's EP features collabs with Cassie and Waka Flocka Flame. The EP comes with instructions on how to acquire DVD footage of he and his entourage.
+ Esperanza Spalding, Radio Music Society: It was a triumph for the relative newcomer when she won 2011's "Best New Artist" category at the Grammys, and she recently wowed us with her pretty "What A Wonderful World" rendition for the Oscars "In Memoriam" montage. With her classically-trained jazz roots and mesmerizing, compelling voice, her second album is poised for a breakthrough.
+ Tanlines, Mixed Emotions: Like the title to Tanlines' new album implies, there's a lot of push and pull with their Mixed Emotions. It's a solid debut album from Brooklynites Eric Emm and Jesse Cohen who get candid on this electro-pop record.
+ Paul Van Dyk, Evolution: For the renowned producer/DJ's sixth artist-based record, he blends the efforts of a bevy of international up-and-coming DJs along with vocal tracks from folks like Owl City's Adam Young and Plumb.
Friday, Mar. 23
+ Mac Miller, Macadelic Mixtape: mtvU's Woodie of the Year winner announced his free mixtape would be released on March 23 during Thursday's taping at SSSW. His Macadelic Tour launches on March 27.
