This Mousepad Costs $60, Needs to Be Plugged In

Razer today announced a new premium mousepad that needs to be plugged in to fully function, as it comes equipped with LEDs along three of its sides.

Called the Razer Firefly, this "hard gaming mouse mat" features customizable lights along the left, right, and bottom borders. The Firefly uses the same Chroma lighting feature seen in a handful of Razer devices that allow them to sync up with each other.

"The Razer Firefly opens up a new category for the Chroma family," Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan said in a press release. "We've designed the Razer Firefly with the best components for a gaming mouse mat, along with the new, fully-customizable Chroma lighting. No one said you can't win with style."

You will, however, have to win with $60 less in your pocket, the suggested retail price for the Firefly. That's the price to pay for its 16.8 million color options and "optimized reflective surface ensur[ing] mouse movements translate to precise cursor movements and rapid in-game responsiveness."

The pad is approximately 14 inches by 10 inches, and is 0.16 inches thick (355 mm x 255 mm x 4 mm). It weighs just under a pound and comes with a seven-foot USB cable for powering the lights. It's set for release in June.

Razer's Chroma tech is still fairly new, having only been announced last year. It's currently available only in the newest versions of the BlackWidow keyboard, DeathAdder and Naga Epic mice, Kraken 7.1 headset, and now the Firefly.

With the release of an SDK earlier this year, game developers can use Chroma to sync up the lights in these devices to events in a game--for instance, flashing them red when you're killed. It remains to be seen how widely the tech is adopted, though, considering how few devices currently support it.
