 [Phoenix, AZ] – [-5/08/24] – Todd McFarlane, creator of Spawn, co-creator of Marvel’s Venom, President of McFarlane Toys, and co-founder of Image Comics, is about to sell a piece of history. His original cover art, the Record-Setting SPAWN #1 issue from 1992 has been digitally scanned from the physical page into this unique and historic item for sale.
What makes this an historic event is that Todd McFarlane has not sold a single page, of any of his physical artwork from his early years on Spawn, since its inception in 1992. He has kept the physical artwork for himself, but now, this auction will be the first time a 1-of-1 of his Spawn artwork from the comic has been offered to the public. Many of his previous works when he was a freelance artist for Marvel Comics have sold for well over $100,000 a piece – with one of his Amazing Spider-Man covers selling for a then record of $660,000 at auction.
McFarlane will now bring to the world of NFTs a 48-hour auction on DRiP, the fastest growing digital collectibles platform in crypto – that allows creators to release exclusive content to their communities, on the Solana blockchain. The auction, starting on Monday May 13th and running for 48-hours, will feature the unique 1-of-1 digital scan of ORIGINAL artwork from SPAWN #1, and officially marks the first-ever NFT auction of McFarlane’s original Spawn comic artwork in digital form.
The digital cover from the original comes from the first issue that sold a record 1.8 million copies in 1992. A record that still stands today for a creator owned comic (McFarlane also owns the corporate record for a single creator when his Spider-Man title sold over 4 million copies while working at Marvel).
