Video Premiere: Sad Robot, ‘Automatic Reset’

Sad Robot

Sad Robot is ready for a reboot.

Los Angeles band Sad Robot may be a bit bummed out, but on "Automatic Reset," the alt-rock group turns those android tears into an angsty anthem. "I want an automatic reset / don't you fight it if you feel it," Katherine Pawlak sings on the hook -- definitely the best chorus ever about updating your iPhone ever. Okay, the song's really about relationships, and the band goes suitably dramatic on the music, laying a bed of crackling drums under pan-seared guitars and Pawlak's savory vocals.

The Sad Robot frontwoman sings with a power that recalls Kelly Clarkson and performs with the unstoppable electricity of the Energizer Bunny, going and going through hotel hallways, a rooftop, and a furious piano session. The "Automatic Reset" video flickers through wild colors and shaky, analog-style filters, inspired by Instagram and old-school film. The vintage vibe's echoed by the set: downtown L.A.'s Hotel Normandie, a circa 1928 building with aging details probably due for a reboot themselves. Or at least a Roomba. The trio's debut album, 1.0, dropped in October -- get "Reset" below.
