Peter Jackson's adaptation of The Fellowship of the Ring is getting a standalone 4K Blu-ray release. Exclusive to Walmart and available to preorder for $35, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is the Steelbook Limited Edition. It includes a 4K UHD and digital versions of the theatrical and extended cuts of the beloved film.
This is the same version and steelbook of The Fellowship of the Ring included in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Steelbook Collection, which received a reprint in August and quickly sold out for $170. If you already own that, there's really no reason to buy this, but for those who missed out, this upcoming release offers solid value.
It's not a 1:1 comparison because the box set also includes a slipcase, but each movie in the box set averaged out to roughly $57. Walmart's $35 price point is quite reasonable, especially if the retailer also winds up releasing the steelbook editions of The Two Towers and The Return of the King. If that happens with the same pricing structure, you'll be able to get the complete LOTR Trilogy with steelbook cases for $115.
The Lord of the Rings is almost always packaged as a trilogy on 4K Blu-ray. You won't find 4K or even standard Blu-ray editions of the individual movies at major retailers, so the fact this even exists is fairly surprising.
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy: One Ring Gift Box, shown above, includes theatrical and extended cuts of all three films on 4K Blu-ray. The traditional Blu-ray case comes packaged inside a faux-leather "book" that will look handsome on a display shelf. You'll also get a pouch containing a replica of the One Ring on a necklace chain.
