Just in time for the Oscars, media network ABC on Thursday released an ABC News app for Xbox One, which the company claims is the first US news app for the console. The free ABC News Xbox One app offers live video and on-demand content, including entertainment news, original programming, and news highlights. Movie fans who plan to watch the Oscars next weekend can use the app to see featured clips and live video from ABC News' coverage of the awards event. This will include interviews with actors, as well as segments dedicated to fashion, trends, and history of the Academy Awards. "The app for Xbox One is a major step forward in our efforts to develop new creative forms of storytelling and put ABC News everywhere people get their news and information," ABC News VP of Digital Colby Smith said. "The ability to choose from multiple live streams, especially during breaking news and special events, will provide an unparalleled viewing experience for the audience." The ABC News app for Xbox One makes use of the console's "Snap" functionality, allowing users to view the app while doing something else. No mention was made regarding whether or not the app supports voice or gesture controls via Kinect. In terms of programming, the ABC News app for Xbox One will offer a range of behind-the-scenes footage from all manner of ABC-Disney partners, including national and international news coverage from ABC affiliates across the United States. The ABC News app will also feature different programming depending on the time of day and what may be happening in the world. ABC News editors will curate video playlists for morning, evening, and weekend editions, the company said. You can even watch up to five different video streams simultaneously if you want to.
